Freshmen and Junior Class President Elections!!

Here are the candidates for Freshman and Junior Class President! Look out for their campaigns around campus this week. Voting begins on Friday, September 28 and ends on Monday, October 1 at 12 PM! Look for an email with a link to the ballot. Winners will be announced at that evening's General Assembly meeting at 6:30 PM in the 3rd floor lounge of Pless Hall.

FRESHMEN CLASS PRESIDENT

LAUREN BANKER 

I am in the Applied Psychology program. I was born and raised in Northern Virginia, a little outside of Washington D.C. I am running for Freshman class president, hoping to plan fun, interesting events if I am chosen. I am especially is interested in exposing NYU students to the many different entertainment and dining options New York City has to offer. My interests are engaging in epic pun battles, reading Harry Potter, and seeing musicals.


VICTORIA LI

 

Victoria Li is a freshman studying Media, Culture, and Communication, and she received her name because she was born across the Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong. However, she grew up in Edison, NJ. She loves online shopping, nail polish, and FOOD.


She is interested in planning fun and beneficial events for Steinhardt as a whole, such as a 16 handles event exclusively for Steinhardt students and a “speed-dating” event for underclassmen to meet upperclassmen and network. Be prepared for a lot of fun events filled with food (Molly's cupcakes anyone?) and a chance to meet different people from various majors!

Aarushi is a Junior, studying Applied Psychology and American Sign Language. She's from New Jersey but her true home will always be the beautiful land of Bloomsburg, PA. She loves drinking coffee, photographing, and exploring. This is her first year on the USG E-Board and she's really excited to start planning events. She's on a mission to make getting involved the cool thing to do!

Blogging Fails+MCC+Deme Lovato=Vice President

Hey, I don't know how I got here from Shelly's other blog :/

 I’m Shelly Infantolino and I’m the Vice President of Steinhardt USG. I never really know what to do with blog posts, which is extremely evident in my failed attempt to have a tumblr. One of my friends looked at my tumblr once and made me aware that people really aren’t as interested in goats and Brooke Fraser as I am. Of course this was a blow to my ego and I haven’t looked at my tumblr since.

However, being a newly converted Media, Culture and Communications I feel like I should have some knowledge of the world of blogging. I’m great with the Twitter and the Facebook which inevitably comes up in every media class regardless the subject of discussion, but it wasn’t until this summer, in one of my summer courses, that I started to understand blogs.

The course was called “Culture Capital: Media and Arts in New York City” and we went all over the city to different media and art organizations such as Google, WNYC, The Apollo Theater, Blue Man Group, and my personal fave, the GMA free Demi Lovato concert in Central Park. Throughout the course of the class I had to blog about one sector of media or arts in New York City and I chose theater. Not only did I learn a ton in this class, I finally started to feel a little bit more comfortable blogging.

Now don’t expect me to be the next blog superstar or anything, but maybe I’ll have something interesting to say about how great Steinhardt is and how fabulous our undergraduate student government is. Until then I hope to see everyone at our general assembly meetings Monday at 6:30pm!

Reflections on Elections

It’s an interesting thing to hold student government elections at the same time as national primary campaigns are reaching the peak of their ugliness.  America is politically divided in a way that we’ve never seen before.  Cross-party relations don’t seem to be improving anytime soon.  While holding the office of Senior Class President may seem insignificant compared to the political showmanship (or lack thereof) taking place in Washington, it has taught me many things, but one in particular.  Being politically active is very important, especially when one belongs to a diverse community such as Steinhardt. 

Just as any candidate in a primary election needs to grasp, those that want to represent the student body must take into consideration their constituents.  Students within Steinhardt take on an enormous variety of roles—musicians, teachers, artists, media gurus and health professionals.  There must be people within our school that understand all of that and are willing to cater to that assortment of needs.  This is why we as a student government are so excited to recruit you as the future leaders of this school. Just as in local, state and federal governments, certain things would simply not happen otherwise.  The importance of taking initiative cannot be understated.  I am very pleased to take part in this process, and especially to pass on the torch to younger leaders within NYU.  Thank you to all that applied during this election period and to those who participate in our school and student government outside of elected positions.  Taking part in leading our school is only the beginning for you!

The Grad School Woes and Solutions of a Steinhardt Senior

As I'm starting the final year of my undergraduate collegiate career I was expecting to feel some sort of super-hero-inducing adrenaline rush, pushing me to the end, leading me to victory. What I have found, however, is an intense regression, all the way back to high school.

The fall air brings more than hot soups and pumpkin spice lattes, it requires us to think of what is coming. Even when I was too young to be aware of it, every fall as school began I was just forced to think of what was coming, both in the academic year and in my life compared to the spring when I all I could think about was the end of the mess I was currently in. Now, at the brisk welcome of my senior year of college I can only think back to my senior year of high school and the pressure of "the next step."

I have decided to apply directly to graduate school after finishing my program here, and although I've told myself and many others that I'm applying it's finally starting to hit me as to what that actually means. Just because I will have my undergraduate degree doesn't mean I can just "go to grad school." I still have to write the essays, go for the interviews, take the tests, fill out the forms, and make every answer count, just like high school!

Luckily the advisors in Teaching and Learning are totally on top of it and are aware that many of my fellow T&L seniors are also reverting back to high school students and need to figure our stuff out! The new Assistant Director for Undergraduate Advising & Student Services in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Marni Passer, has put together a workshop for T&L seniors all about grad school, the whats-what and the how-tos.

The Secretary Lets Us Know Why USG is AWESOME!

I’m Stephanie, this year’s USG Secretary. I don’t have a lot of things that I specifically want to share with the internet world right now, but I would love tot ell you how AWESOME Steinhardt/USG is going to be this year!

Steinhardt has been an extremely important component of my NYU career. I love the way it gives us the benefits of an intimate academic community while still being part of a huge global university. We all know who our advisors are and who to contact about our academic programs. We have a well-rounded student body with many differences, but we are all dedicated to influencing and improving the world around us in some way.

Undergraduate Student Government reflects the Steinhardt student body. We try to advocate for the needs and interests of the entire student body. We plan fun events like Yankees games (even though people like me root against them). We have service opportunities, and meetings where your voices can be heard. We meet with advisors from different departments, and once a semester we have the chance to talk to the Steinhardt deans and other administrators. We participate in NYU’s All-University games. Last year, we even won the best t-shirt!

So what can USG do for you? I hope that it will give you an opportunity to find your niche at NYU. I started coming to General Assembly meetings as a freshman because I thought student government was interesting, I liked being in the know about what’s happening on campus, and I wanted to meet people. Maybe it will do the same for you. Or maybe it will just feed you once a week, but that’s not bad either!

At the risk of being overly cheesy, I just want to say one more time that I absolutely love the Undergraduate Student Government and I hope you will, too. Come to a meeting on the 3rd floor of Pless Hall any Monday night at 6:30! We will find a place for you.

USG - Treasurer

As the current Treasurer of Steinhardt Undergraduate Student Government, I am in charge of our budget and allotting money to all our clubs. I meet with our USG Advisor, Jenn Wells, every week and we go over the budget and make sure that our organization is financially sound. I love coming to our General Assembly meetings and hearing what all our amazing clubs are doing with the money we sponsor them with. Being Treasurer has also allowed me to know the ins-and-outs of the University and the Bursar department. Did you know that there is a Bank at NYU? It is in the very far corner next to the Financial Aid office.

It has been very rewarding being a part of Steinhardt Undergraduate Student Government and I would highly recommend running for Treasurer if you love Excel Spreadsheets, are good with numbers, and are organized.

Allie Gerba: Thoughts on Alternate Senator

If you are thinking of running for Alternate Senator, here is a sneak peak of the job.
The Alternate Senator is responsible for all duties delegated to him/her by the Senator (hence the title). Luckily for me, Katie Sylvester is an amazing Senator and always makes her meetings and appointments.

The second job of the Senator is to is to manage all the Steinhardt Clubs. In September/October I sent out applications for old and new clubs to apply to be an official Steinhardt clubs. Next I presented each application to the e-board, and together we approved 10 clubs. I work really closely with our awesome Treasurer, Alicia Kim, and together we delegate budgets for each club depending on their size, the kinds of events they plan, and their loyalty to USG. Alicia and I also held a meeting in the beginning of the year with the clubs to go over policies and 'how to be reimbursed.' The club reps, treasurers, presidents and myself email frequently about monetary matters, attendance, and basic questions. I was lucky to work with such great people this year! It made the job really enjoyable.

Professional Development Grant Applications are now available!

Each Spring, a portion of the Undergraduate Student Government budget is set aside to support students in their professional development. Reimbursements are offered on a competitive basis to undergraduate students in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development to help offset the cost of various professional activities related to their studies, such as attending professional conferences, research projects, art exhibits, musical performances, speaking engagements, etc. Funds can be used toward conference fees, travel and accommodation expenses, and presentation supplies.

Please Note: These reimbursements are competitive and the application process does not guarantee that funds will be awarded. In some cases, partial reimbursements may be awarded.
Expenses for class related activities will not be reimbursed.

Completed applications with original receipts must be submitted by Friday, April 15th, 2011 at 5pm for consideration. Late, incomplete, or illegible applications will not be considered. Grant recipients will be invited to and recognized at the Steinhardt Undergraduate Awards Gala on

Grant recipients will be notified on or before Wednesday, April 20th, 2011.

A Note From The Office of The President

Being President this year of Steinhardt Undergraduate Student Government has been extremely rewarding. As President, I am responsible for setting meeting agendas and presiding over all Executive Board and General Assembly meetings of USG. It is my responsibility to delegate all major assignments and projects as well as to support my fellow board members if they need help fulfilling their duties. I also sit on the University Committee on Student Life (representing Steinhardt Undergraduates), as well as the Undergraduate Affairs Committee, which brings the Presidents from every school council together once a month to discuss our individual schools and how we can work together.

Whether it is event planning or policy changing, the President is involved in all aspects of USG. It is a great position if you are looking to gain leadership experience in a management function. If you are interested in running for President, it is important to note that you need to be extremely organized in this role and be prepared to attend University Council meetings on Thursday afternoons. Additionally, the position requires you to meet weekly with our advisor.

Day of Service!

Hey Steinhardt!

Saturday, April 2 will be USG's spring Day of Service. Join us from 11AM-2PM to make craft kits, sunny
grams, and Surgi dolls, all projects that will benefit Project Sunshine. The event will be held on the 1st
floor of Pless Hall, 82 Washington Square East.

We will also be taking a group of volunteers to St. Joseph's soup kitchen. For more information on this

A Word from Your Senior Class President

The Senior Class President position is a position in USG that I have found to be one of the most rewarding. In my fourth year here at NYU and in USG I have taken what I have learned and applied it to creating a cohesion between the class presidents. As Senior Class President I have completed all my duties that are required of me (i.e. running elections and having one program a month.) But I have also used my previous experience to try and have the class presidents work together as a group.

As the Senior Class President not only does your constituency look up to you to do do programs and try and represent their ideals and beliefs, but the younger class presidents look up to you to make an example and as a sort of guide. So what I will say to those thinking about applying for Senior Class President is that you should be a person who doesn't mind getting asked questions about things happening in USG or about process that people go through (you are going to get a lot of questions when it comes time for elections) and you should be a person who is willing and able to work well with others. This is not a position where you work by yourself, there is a lot of time you will be required to collaborate with people and that is something to keep in mind.

Being Senior Class President was one of the best decisions that I ever made and wouldn't change it for the world. I'm so happy to have been a part of USG for the past four years and look forward to seeing how USG continues when I leave!!

Classwars!

Throughout the entire month of February the four classes have been competing in an epic battle of wit, sass, and of course class spirit. Through various games at General Assembly meetings as well as their own outside class events, each team has been accumulating points to see which class will come out on top. The winning class will be allotted a larger budget for bigger and better events in the rest of the semester. All of these small activities led up to the final Classwars showdown, the SCAVENGER HUNT.

Last Sunday a few of us braved the rain and came out to the square to compete in the scavenger hunt. Classes were asked to complete as many of the given tasks as they could in an hour, and make it back to the steps of Kimmel in time. Teams took pictures in the fountain, designed outfits for our own Devon Pryor, checked out books with their name in title, came up with cheers, and did about eight more tasks in order to complete the hunt in time. Before the showdown began the Freshmen led with 39 points, followed by the Juniors with 37, Sophomores with 31 and the Seniors trailing behind with 27 points. However, after all was said and done the Junior class won the scavenger hunt winning Classwars for the second time in a row with a whopping 77 points!

Thank you to our GA members and everyone in Steinhardt who participated, it has been lots of fun! Juniors, keep your eyes peeled for emails from your class president about upcoming events, they should be pretty crazy!

ELECTION INFO - Steinhardt Undergraduate Student Government

Want to join Steinhardt Undergraduate Student Government?? Here are some facts you should know before you get started. And a list of positions and their responsibilities.

You must be a currently enrolled Steinhardt undergraduate student in good

academic standing

Campaigning is the sole responsibility of the candidate. If you wish to post flyers, a copy must first be sent to devon.pryor@nyu.edu for approval. Campaigning will take place from Monday, April 3 through Monday, April 11.

In order to be eligible for any USG Executive Board or Council position, the candidate must be available Mondays at 8pm and Tuesdays from 12:30 - 1:45pm or at a different time for Executive Board and General Assembly Meetings as decided by the Executive Board.

Online elections will take place Monday, April 11 through Monday, April 18^th.

Please attach a picture of you that you want to use for your candidate picture for elections (note: this is optional. Picture will appear by your name on online voting ballot).

President

In accordance with the Constitution, the President shall:

1. In conjunction with the Board, develop a goal statement at the beginning of each academic year; report progress on these goals at mid-year and at the end of the term.

2. Preside at the Executive Board, Council, and Assembly meetings of the USG.

3. Coordinate the organization of the agenda for these meetings.

4. Serve as a member of, or appoint an alternate to, the Committees of the University Committee on Student Life (UCSL).

5. Attend meetings of the Faculty of The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development or appoint an alternate to attend.

Vice President

In accordance with the Constitution, the Vice President shall:

1. Conduct meetings in the absence of the President.

2. Be responsible for coordinating and implementing Assembly motions.

3. Serve as an ex-officio member of all internal standing committees.

4. Initiate and oversee internal committees of the USG for proper functioning.

5. Succeed the President in an event of the resignation or removal of the latter.

6. Carry out all other responsibilities as delegated by the President.

Treasurer

In accordance with the Constitution, the Treasurer shall:

1. Implement the budget plans as outlined by the Executive Board.

2. Be informed of the financial standing of the USG and report monthly, or as necessary, to the Executive Board, Council, and Assembly.

3. Maintain all expense receipts, issue checks, balance ledger, and set next year’s budget and club allocations.

4. Attend all meetings of the USG Council and Assembly.

5. Carry out all other responsibilities delegated by the USG President.

Secretary

In accordance with the Constitution, the Secretary shall:

1. Keep the minutes of the Executive Board, Council, Assembly, and other special meetings.

2. See that cumulative minutes, committee reports and correspondence are maintained and made available upon request.

3. Take and keep records of attendance at each meeting.

4. Draft communications at the request and approval of the Executive Board.

5. Maintain an up-to-date contact list of the active members of the Assembly.

6. Review and respond to general USG voicemail messages and e-mail correspondence.

7. Carry out all other responsibilities as delegated by the President.

Senator

In accordance with the Constitution, the Senator shall:

1. Attend meetings of the University Senate.

2. Attend meetings of the Student Senators Council (SSC) and University Committee on Student Life (UCSL).

3. Submit reports to the Executive Board, Council, and Assembly of the USG reflecting the current issues of concern before the Senate.

4. Keep a file of all minutes and reports of the University Senate at the office of the USG for further reference.

Alternate Senator

In accordance with the Constitution, the Alternate Senator shall:

1. Assist the Senator if need be.

2. Replace the Senator in the event that the Senator can no longer remain in office.

3. Serve as the Alternate at any meeting the Senator is unable to attend.

4. Regularly review the attendance of club representatives and status.

5. Regularly report to the Treasurer and Executive Board regarding the status of USG-sponsored clubs for review.

6. Organize and maintain club status and application.

7. Carry out all other responsibilities as delegated by the President.

Sophomore, Junior and Senior Class Presidents

In accordance with the Constitution, the Class Presidents shall:

1. Help project the needs, concerns, and wishes of their respective constituents.

2. Conduct at least one event per month for their student population as is fitting and appropriate for the class.

3. Attend all meetings of the USG Council and Assembly.

4. Serve as advocates for their class in decisions of the USG.

5. Preside over regular meetings of a committee consisting of their respective populations.

6. Attend, and perhaps preside at, class-specific committee meetings (i.e. Senior Legacy Committee, USG Election Committee, etc.)

7. Carry out all other responsibilities as delegated by the President of the USG.

1831 Fund. Seniors, Leave Your Mark!

Hi Steinhardt Seniors!

I hope you are enjoying your Senior year! I can’t believe it is already March and we will be graduating in a few weeks.



Last month President John Sexton and Student Senators Council Chair Katie Sylvester (also a Steinhardt senior) e-mailed our class regarding the 1831 Fund. All money raised through the new 1831 Initiative will go directly toward financial aid. It is our hope that by increasing financial support to future students, we will instill a new sense of pride and satisfaction in earning an NYU degree.

It is especially important for you to give towards the 1831 fund because President John Sexton will match every $1,000 you raise for incoming Steinhardt students. Additionally, the school with the highest participation rate with receives an additional $5,000 scholarship for incoming freshman. Since Steinhardt is a smaller undergraduate school, we have a good chance of having the highest participation rate if everyone gives $18.31 towards this year’s Senior Legacy.

Hello all!

As the Junior Class President, I try to create fun programs that I know juniors will want to attend. Last week, I took juniors to the original Shake Shack in Madison Square Park. Although the entire menu will make you salivate even on a full stomach, the unusually warm weather called for shakes. We were in luck, as Shake Shack had released the Car-Mallow shake in honor the newest Knickerbocker, Carmelo Anthony. The shake has a vanilla custard base with caramel sauce and marshmallow flavorings. Though likely that it would cause a cavity or clog your arteries if consumed in large quantities, this is definitely a shake to order at least once, especially since it'll only be offered for a limited time.

Thanks to everyone who came out that day. We had some good laughs in the park!

Semi Formal is Just Around the Corner!

This year’s Semi Formal is quickly approaching. Be sure to buy your tickets for
this awesome event, to be held at the Battery Gardens, inside Battery Park, on
Friday, February 18th, 8PM-12AM. Sales end on FEBRUARY 11, so act fast!
Tickets are $35 and the cost includes passed hors d’oeuvres, dinner, full
dessert and soda bars, as well as dancing and awesome entertainment provided by

Steinhardt Day of Service 2010

A number of Steinhardt students came out to volunteer their time and talents at Steinhardt Undergraduate Student Government’s DAY OF SERVICE, on October 23rd. Participants constructed Surgi Dolls, wrote Sunny Grams, and assembled craft kits, all of which were donated to Project Sunshine, an organization that aims to brighten the lives of hospitalized children. “The event was extremely successful, and an enormous thanks to all who came out!” said USG Vice President Joey Kopriva, Day of Service chairperson.
